Visit resource : Maths Circle - ICTS siteThe CMI Math Circle is a weekly gathering for school students who enjoy asking "why", solving puzzles, and exploring ideas beyond the standard curriculum. Together we investigate patterns, discuss intriguing problems, and build mathematical understanding in a friendly, low-pressure environment.
Math circles have a long tradition as communities where young mathematicians learn by doing: posing questions, experimenting with examples, and sharing discoveries with one another. Our aim is to give students a taste of how mathematicians think, while keeping the joy of problem solving at the center.
Math Circles are communities where school students encounter mathematics through intriguing problems, patterns, puzzles, and discussion. Rather than simply learning formulas or following prescribed methods, students are encouraged to ask precise questions, experiment with examples, explain their ideas, listen to different approaches, and discover why something is true. The aim is to give them an experience of mathematics as a living, creative subject—and to let them see something of how mathematicians actually think.
A Math Circle is not a tuition class, coaching programme, or examination-preparation course. It does not seek to complete the school syllabus or train every participant for competitions. The emphasis is on exploration, thoughtful discussion, and the gradual development of mathematical habits of mind: looking for structure, reasoning carefully, tolerating uncertainty, and learning from unsuccessful attempts. In this setting, students are given the time and freedom to think beyond the immediate demand for a correct answer.
These habits are valuable far beyond mathematics. In a world shaped by data, technology, and quantitative claims, young people need to assess information, recognize patterns, question assumptions, and make well-reasoned decisions. Parents may therefore consider a Math Circle not only for children who already enjoy mathematics, and not necessarily because they intend to become professional mathematicians, but because it can help them become more curious, precise, confident, and resilient thinkers—whatever path they eventually choose.
Explore number patterns, geometry, logic, graph theory, symmetry, cryptography, and many other topics through problems and discussion.
Curious students (suggested age 12–15, flexible) who are willing to think deeply, enjoy asking questions, and are eager to explore mathematics. No special preparation is required.
