Admissions for 2020–2021


Application Deadline:

  • Applications for 2020 have closed on 20 May, 2020.

  • Students who have completed the application process can log in to the application form and update their choice of exam centre, as well as other personal and academic details.


CMI entrance examination date:

  • The CMI entrance examination rescheduled for 1 August, 2020 is postponed. The new date is not yet fixed and will be decided depending on how the Covid-19 situation evolves around the country. The exam will not be held before 15 September, 2020. The exact date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.

  • Given the uncertainty regarding the date of the entrance examination, students will be allowed to update their choice of examination centre after the rescheduled date is announced.


Applying to CMI:

  • If you have already applied online for CMI's PhD programmes, you can also qualify for the interview by writing national level exams such as JEST and NBHM. Specific details are give below, at the bottom of this page.

  • Here is the schedule for applications for the academic year 2020–2021.

    • Applications are closed.

    • Admit Cards to be available online : Friday, 1 May, 2020 Monday, 6 July, 2020.
      Will be announced after entrance examination date is finalized.

    • Date of the Entrance Examination : Friday, 15 May, 2020 Saturday, 1 August, 2020.
      Rescheduled. New date will be announced.

    • Date of announcement of results : Before Friday, 19 June, 2020
      Approximately one month from the date of the entrance examination.

Academic programmes offered at CMI

Admission will be made to the following programmes in 2020–21.

Notes:

  • There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. You need not select your course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.
  • For Ph.D. in Physics, candidates should write the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).

Eligibility for Admission

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Physics:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a strong background in mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a strong background in computer science.
  • M.Sc. in Data Science:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a background in mathematics/statistics/computer science.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science:    B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.
  • Ph.D. in Physics:    M.Sc.(Physics).

How to Apply

You may apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person.

For all programmes other than Ph.D. Physics, applicants will have to take an entrance examination. The entrance examinations for 2020-21 will take place on 15 May, 2020 1 August, 2020 a date to be announced at the following locations: Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Srinagar and Trivandrum.

For Ph.D. Physics, candidates should write the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST). There is no separate CMI entrance examination for Ph.D. Physics.

Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai for shortlisted candidates. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.

Qualify for PhD Mathematics via NBHM

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2020 can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination if they are been awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdmath2020@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your NBHM scorecard along with your BSc and MSc academic transcripts.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Computer Science via JEST-2020

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI for the academic year starting August 2020 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2020) in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

If you have written JEST-2020 and wish to apply to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdcs2020@cmi.ac.in to inform us that you have also written JEST.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in JEST-2020, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Physics via JEST-2020

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2020 will qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2020) in Physics. There is no separate CMI entrance examination for PhD Physics. Candidates within the top 300 ranks in JEST-2020 qualify for interview through this category.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdphy2020@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your JEST scorecard.

If you qualify for the interview based on your JEST-2020 performance, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee after the deadline for submitting application forms.
