Applying to CMI

  • Applications for August, 2024 are open. Look up the online Application Form for details on how to apply. The last date for completing the application process is Monday, 15 April, 2024.

  • Here is the schedule for applications for the session starting in August, 2024 (academic year 2024–2025).

    • Applications open (online): Monday, 4 March, 2024
    • Last date to fill out online applications, (including online payments): Monday, 15 April, 2024, 23:59 IST
    • Admit Cards to be available online: Sunday, 12 May, 2024.
    • Date of the Entrance Examination: Sunday, 19 May, 2024.
    • Date of announcement of results: Approximately one month from the date of the entrance examination.
    • Interviews:
      • PhD Maths : 1-4 July, 2024 (in CMI).
      • MSc Maths : 4-5 July, 2024 (in CMI).
      • Dates of the other interviews will be announced later.
    • Academic session starts: First week of August, 2024.

Special cases

  • Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics are exempted from writing the BSc entrance examination. See details below.

  • For CMI's PhD programmes, you can also qualify for the interview by writing national level exams such as JEST and NBHM. Specific details are give below for Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics.

Academic programmes offered at CMI

Admission will be made to the following programmes in 2024–25.

Notes:

  • There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. You need not select your course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.

  • For Ph.D. in Physics, candidates should write the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE.

Eligibility for Admission

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Physics:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a strong background in mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a strong background in computer science.
  • M.Sc. in Data Science:    Undergraduate degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, …) with a background in mathematics/statistics/computer science.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science:    B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.
  • Ph.D. in Physics:    M.Sc.(Physics).

How to Apply

For all programmes other than Ph.D. Physics, applicants will have to take an entrance examination. The entrance examinations for 2024-25 will take place on Sunday, 19 May, 2024 at designated exam centres at the following locations.

Agartala, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Durgapur, Goa, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Noida, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Siliguri, Srinagar, Tiruchi, Trivandrum, Visakhapatnam

For Ph.D. in Physics, candidates should write the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), UGC-CSIR NET, or GATE. There is no separate CMI entrance examination for Ph.D. Physics.

Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview for shortlisted candidates. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.

Direct admission to BSc through Olympiads

Students with exceptionally good performance in the National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS are exempted from writing the BSc entrance examination.

Typically, the following categories of students qualify for direct admission:

  • Students who have qualified for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) or European Girls Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOOTC) in Class 11 or Class 12.
  • Students who have qualified for the Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Physics in Class 11 or Class 12.
  • Students who have qualified for the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC), or have received a gold or silver medal at the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) in Class 11 or Class 12.

To apply for admission through this route, please fill out the CMI Application Form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, please send an email to admissions@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details and the category through which you qualify for direct admission. You will then receive a confirmation by email if you are exempted from writing the entrance exam.

Qualify for PhD Mathematics via NBHM

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination if they are been awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. fter you fill out the form, send an email to phdmath2024@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details, attaching a scanned copy of your NBHM scorecard along with your BSc and MSc academic transcripts.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Computer Science via JEST

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

If you have written JEST-2024 and wish to apply to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdcs2024@cmi.ac.in with your CMI and JEST application details to inform us that you have also written JEST.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in JEST-2024, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Physics via JEST, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE

Candidates applying to the PhD program in Physics should satisfy one of the following criteria:

  1. JEST: A rank of 400 or below in the Joint Entrance Screening Test in Physics. (Scorecard to be produced at the time of the interview.)

  2. UGC-CSIR NET: Have qualified Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR with a rank of 200 or less. (A valid letter from CSIR-UGC to this effect is to be produced at the time of the interview. Those who have only qualified for the Lectureship are NOT eligible.)

  3. GATE: A rank of 100 or less in the GATE (valid GATE scorecard to be produced at the time of the interview.)

There is no separate CMI entrance examination for PhD Physics. More details about the application procedure will be announced when applications for 2024 open.

From the applications received, a shortlist of candidates for the interview will be created. A successful application does not guarantee a spot on the shortlist.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdphy2024@cmi.ac.in with your CMI application details, attaching a scanned copy of the appropriate scorecard(s).

If you qualify for the interview based on your performance in any one of the qualifying exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee.
