Admissions


  • Applications for August, 2014 have closed on April 15, 2014.

    Applicants who have already registered online before the deadline will be able to log in and update details till midnight on Saturday, April 19, 2014. We will accept Demand Drafts will April 22, 2014.

    Look up the Application Procedure for links to log in to the online application page and update your details. Note that fresh registrations are closed.

  • Admit Cards will be available from May 1–14, 2014. You will be able to access the admit card online from the application form website. Admit cards will also be sent by email to you when they are ready.

  • If you qualify for direct admission to the undergraduate programme as an Olympiad student and you have not yet applied to CMI, you can request a form by writing to admissions@cmi.ac.in.

  • For CMI's PhD programmes, you can also qualify for the interview by writing national level exams such as CSIR/JEST/NBHM. Specific details are give below, at the bottom of this page.

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Computer Science (3 year integrated course).
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Physics (3 year integrated course).
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Applications of Mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science.
  • Ph.D. in Physics.

Note: There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes. You need not select your course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.

Eligibility for Admission

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Physics:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics:    B.Sc.(Math)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Applications of Mathematics:    B.Sc.(Math/Physics/Statistics)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(C.S.)/B.C.A. or B.Sc.(Math) with a strong background in C.S.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science:    B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.
  • Ph.D. in Physics:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Physics)/M.Sc.(Physics).

How to Apply

You may apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person. Look up the Application Procedure for details on how to apply.

For all the programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination on Thursday, 15 May, 2014. The entrance examination centres for 2014 are as follows: Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong, Srinagar and Trivandrum.

Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.

All students receive handsome scholarships that meet all expenses. B.Sc. (Hons.) students receive a scholarship of Rs. 4000 per month, M.Sc. students receive a scholarship of Rs. 6000 per month and Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs. 16000 per month. Students of B.Sc. (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1000, made possible through generous private donations.

Qualify for PhD Mathematics via NBHM/CSIR

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2014 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the written exam in Mathematics conducted by NBHM/CSIR, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Mathematics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdmath2014@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your NBHM/CSIR scorecard along with your BSc and MSc academic transcripts.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Computer Science via JEST-2014

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI for the academic year starting August 2014 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2014) in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

If you have written JEST-2014 and wish to apply to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdcs2014@cmi.ac.in to inform us that you have also written JEST.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in JEST-2014, You will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.

Qualify for PhD Physics via JEST-2014

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI for the academic year starting August 2014 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2014) in Physics without writing the CMI entrance examination. Only candidates within the top 300 ranks will qualify through this category.

If you wish to apply to the PhD programme in Physics at CMI through this channel, you should fill out the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After you fill out the form, send an email to phdphy2014@cmi.ac.in attaching a scanned copy of your JEST scorecard.

If you qualify directly for the interview based on your performance in these exams, you will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If you do not hear from us, you must write the CMI entrance examination in order to qualify.
