New: Qualify for PhD Computer Science via JEST-2010

Candidates applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science at CMI for the academic year starting August 2010 can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2010) in Theoretical Computer Science. Candidates who qualify through JEST-2010 will be notified directly with more details.

Eligibility for Admission

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics:    12th standard or equivalent.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics:    B.Sc.(Math)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Applications of Mathematics:    B.Sc.(Math,Physics,Statistics)/B.Math/B.Stat/B.E./B.Tech.
  • M.Sc. in Computer Science:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(C.S.) or B.Sc.(Math) with a strong background in C.S.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics:    B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Math)/M.Sc.(Math).
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science:    B.E/B.Tech/M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A.

How to Apply

Applications for August, 2010 will open in March, 2010. Watch this page for the announcemnt.

For all the programmes, applicants will have to take an entrance examination, which is expected to be held at the end of May, 2010. In addition, selection for Ph.D. will involve an interview at Chennai.

CMI has examination centres across the country. In 2009, the entrance examination was held in Allahabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong and Srinagar. We expect to hold the exam at a similar list of centres across the country in 2010.

All students receive handsome scholarships that meet all expenses. B.Sc. (Hons.) students receive a scholarship of Rs. 3000 per month, M.Sc. students receive a scholarship of Rs. 5000 per month and Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs. 12000 per month. Students of B.Sc. (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 2000, made possible through generous private donations.

Entrance Exam Syllabus


BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science [sample paper] The Examination will be a test of aptitude for Mathematics at the 12th standard level, featuring both objective questions and problems drawn mostly from the following topics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. BSc (Hons) Physics [sample paper] The Examination will be a test of aptitude for Physics at the 12th standard level. [More details and reading material].

MSc/PhD Computer Science [sample paper] Examination will be a test of aptitude for Computer Science featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from the following topics: discrete mathematics, algorithms, basic computer organization and some programming.

MSc/PhD Mathematics [sample paper] The Examination will be a test of aptitude for Mathematics featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from the following topics: algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, calculus.
