Classical Mechanics 2 (B.Sc. Spring (Jan-April) 2023) Course Webpage

This is the second course in classical mechancis for first year Mathematics and Physics B.Sc. students

The course is scheduled to meet from 10:30 to 11:45 am on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Lecture Hall 1 at CMI.

The first meeting will be on Monday 2 Jan, 2023 at 1030am in LH1.

Topics: Degrees of freedom, configuration space, phase space, dynamical variables, conserved quantities, Hamilton's principle of extremal action, Euler-Lagrange Equations, conjugate momenta, cyclic coordinates, conserved Hamiltonian and energy, Noether's theorem, Hamilton's equations, Legendre transform from Lagrangian to Hamiltonian, phase space variational principle, Poisson brackets, canonical transformations, two-body problem of gravitating point masses, small oscillations, normal modes, rigid body mechanics.
