Abstract

Gromov-Witten theory probes the geometry of a projective manifold X by studying maps into X from curves. It is a modern take on classical curve counting problems, such as Schubert calculus. An important technique in the subject is passing from X to a reducible union of simpler projective manifolds. The output of these techniques are known as “degeneration formulas” and they have a rich combinatorial structure. I will give an overview of this circle of ideas, including recent advances that allow us to approach some old questions about the relationship between Gromov-Witten theory and the cohomology of the moduli space of curves.
