Abstract

In the first lecture I gave recollections about reductive group schemes and explained Tits' rule of signs for complex semisimple Lie algebras. In the second one, I explained Artin's result on extension of partially defined homomorphims of group schemes. In today's lecture, I will explain the crucial construction by Demazure of the root datum of a reductive group scheme G which has a split maximal torus. In the next lecture, I plan to discuss pinnings, groups of automorphisms, uniqueness of split groups and to introduce the notion of quasi-split groups (and begin their classification).
