Abstract

A multiple cut operation on a symplectic manifold produces a collection of cut spaces. In this talk I explain, using examples, how curves in the symplectic manifold degenerate under a multiple cut into broken curves. I will relate these to `tropical curves in the plane' which were used by Mikhalkin to count curves in the complex projective plane.
