Square roots: a historical perspective

Finding square roots is one of the first operations which has broad applicability, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, involves steps that are not "canonical" or intuitively "obvious". In this talk we will discuss engagements with the issue in ancient times, methods adopted towards them, and some aspects of modern mathematics related to them.
