Abstract

In 1966 Harsh Anand, V. C. Dumir and Hansraj Gupta formulated a number of conjectures concerning enumeration of doubly stochastic matrices with given line sum. In 1973, R. P. Stanley and Eugene Earhart solved most of these conjectures using techniques from commutative algebra and convex geometry. We shall sketch Stanley’s solution after recalling necessary background from commutative algebra.
