Abstract

Harish-Chandra's successful classification of irreducible representations provides a starting point to understanding the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups. In this talk, we will focus on one aspect of this theory, namely the notion of associated varieties which are geometric varieties associated to certain irreducible representations. For classical Lie groups, there are precise combinatorial descriptions. We will discuss how the study of the adjoint action of a complex reductive Lie group on its Lie algebra helps us understand these associated varieties.
