Abstract

The dominant economic paradigm is founded on the premise that growth is integral to creation of wealth which in turn is essential for human progress. The growth is driven by a materials economy that relies on a steady supply of natural resources. Given this, what is the viability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India campaign in an era of environmental crises and fast-depleting resources?

Nityanand Jayaraman is a local journalist and environmental activist, and a visiting faculty at the Asian College of Journalism. He is part of the Vettiver Collective, and does extensive outreach among Chennai's youth on issues relating to environmental justice, including industrial pollution, climate change and the rights of coastal fishers.
