R. Balasubramanian
Director, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai.

Abstract

The ternary Goldbach conjecture states that every odd integer greater than 6 is sum of three primes. We shall explore the history of this problem and the recent development due to Harald Helfgott.

About the Speaker:

Prof. R. Balasubramanian is a leading number theorist well known for his work in the study of Riemann Zeta Functions, Dirichlet $L$ function and the arithmetic consequences thereof. He has also made significant contributions to solving mathematical problems arising from cryptography and theoretical computer science. He is the Director of IMSc., Chennai and Chairman of the National Board for Higher Mathemtatics (NBHM). He is a receipient of a number of awards and recognitions including the Padma Shri (2006) and Chevalier Ordre National du M\'érite (2000). Prof. Balasubramanian's influence on the teaching program at CMI is enormous, reflected in a large number of our graduates taking up number theory after learning the subject under him.
