Abstract

Focusing on examples, I would illustrate how geometric techniques can be applied to number theoretic questions. Building on these examples, one could motivate the following long standing conjecture: If V is a cubic hypersurface over k, which has a point of degree coprime to three then V has a rational point. In 1976 Coray proved a partial result in the case when V is a cubic surface. I would explain his argument which is very geometric in nature. This talk will be accessible to students.
