Abstract

Endowment Lectures at CMI (Wednesday, 15 February 2012)

K. Lakshmanan Memorial Distinguished Lecture

============================================

Speaker : Prof. N. Mohan Kumar Washington University St Louis, U.S.A.

Title : Complete Intersections

Abstract : Algebraic Geometry is the study of sets in n-space given as the common zeroes of a collection of polynomials in the co-ordinates of the space. So, given such a set, one of the crudest question, albeit an important one, one can ask is what is the smallest number of equations whose common zeroes the given set is. We will discuss related issues and some of the techniques to discover this number.

Time : 2.00-3.00 p.m.

Coffee Break : 3.00-3.30 p.m.

Speaker : Prof. V.S. Sunder Institute of Mathematical Sciences Chennai

Title : An invitation to free probability

Abstract : We try and give a fleeting view of Voiculescu's far-reaching theory of free probability. On the way, we shall have glimpses of a heady mix of: von Neumann algebras, non commutative probability spaces, non-crossing partitions, moments and cumulants in free probability, Mobius inversion in posets, free convolution, Wigtner's semi- circular law, ...

Time : 3.30-4.30 p.m.
