Sunder, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai (3.304.30 p.m.) Endowment Lectures at Chennai Mathematical Institute. 150212 Abstract Endowment Lectures at CMI (Wednesday, 15 February 2012) K. Lakshmanan Memorial Distinguished Lecture ============================================ Speaker : Prof. N. Mohan Kumar Washington University St Louis, U.S.A. Title : Complete Intersections Abstract : Algebraic Geometry is the study of sets in nspace given as the common zeroes of a collection of polynomials in the coordinates of the space. So, given such a set, one of the crudest question, albeit an important one, one can ask is what is the smallest number of equations whose common zeroes the given set is. We will discuss related issues and some of the techniques to discover this number. Time : 2.003.00 p.m. Coffee Break : 3.003.30 p.m. R.K. Rubugunday Distinguished Lecture ===================================== Speaker : Prof. V.S. Sunder Institute of Mathematical Sciences Chennai Title : An invitation to free probability Abstract : We try and give a fleeting view of Voiculescu's farreaching theory of free probability. On the way, we shall have glimpses of a heady mix of: von Neumann algebras, non commutative probability spaces, noncrossing partitions, moments and cumulants in free probability, Mobius inversion in posets, free convolution, Wigtner's semi circular law, ... Time : 3.304.30 p.m. Venue : Seminar Hall Chennai Mathematical Institute Plot No. H1, SIPCOT IT Park Kelambakkam, Siruseri603 103 Tamil Nadu, India. High Tea : 4.305.00 p.m.
