Abstract

Ever since the fundamental development of the theory of least squares under dynamic constraints by Gauss over 200 years ago, scientists have followed this lead to develop methods to improve forecast by fitting models to data/observations. This process of fitting models (static/dynamic; empirical/ correlation/process or physics based; deterministic/stochastic) to data is called data assimilation. An overview of the methods and computational challenges in this area will be discussed.
