Abstract

The subject of Noncommutative Geometry tries to understand mathematical structures via operator algebras. One first attaches an algebra of operators to the mathematical structure he/she is willing to investigate and then analyzes the algebra using the tools like Cyclic cohomology, KK-theory. We will see an example of this kind of analysis in the context of foliations. More precisely I'll describe the operator algebra associated with a foliation. After that if time permits I'll describe the local index formula of Connes and Moscovici.
