CMI Arts Initiative Workshop Speaker: Oindrila Raychaudhuri, TIFR Date: Wednesday, 4 October 2023 Time: 3:30 PM Venue: Lecture Hall 801 From Artists Studio to Science Institute: The Story of the TIFR Art Collection Oindrila Raychaudhuri TIFR. 04-10-23 Abstract TIFR is known as a premier institute for research and education in India, but is also home to a priceless collection of very high quality art, which makes it unique among s04cientific institutions anywhere in the world. This talk will first introduce Homi J. Bhabha, the founder of TIFR and describe how TIFR was set up. This will be followed by a lightning introduction to Indian art, especially touching upon the Bombay Progressives, followed by the story of the initiation and growth of the art collection in TIFR. Finally, some of the works of the TIFR Collection will be described and illustrated with images. About the speaker: Oindrila Raychaudhuri, a graduate from the University of Calcutta, is associated with two leading Archives of Mumbai the Archives of the TIFR as a Consultant Archivist and the Archives of the CSMVS (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) as a Consultant Research Facilitator. She is also looking after the TIFR Art Collection and regularly organises Art Walks in TIFR where the art lovers of Mumbai can get a glimpse of the priceless collection.
