Physics Colloquium Speaker: Sreerup Raychadhuri, TIFR Date: Tuesday, 03 October 2023 Time: 11:30 AM Venue: Lecture Hall 801 S.N. Bose - His Life and Work Sreerup Raychadhuri TIFR. 03-10-23 Abstract The life, times and scientific work of Satyendra Nath Bose (1894 - 1974) will be described in this talk. We shall start with an introduction to the quantum theory of blackbody radiation, where Bose made his epoch-making contribution. We will then look at the early life of Bose and the fertile intellectual milieu that created this man of genius. The story of his famous discovery of Bose statistics will then be taken up. The last part of the talk will be a panorama of Bose's later life as a national celebrity but a largely forgotten figure on the international scene. We shall conclude with some critical comments on the story of this great scientist and his legacy. About the speaker: Sreerup Raychadhuri is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and Dean of Administration at TIFR. He has worked extensively on electroweak interactions, supersymmetry, extra spacetime dimensions, and techniques to search for new particles at high-energy accelerator machines. He has written a book on the history of Indian science published by Springer-Nature. He takes a great interest in popularising science through articles and lectures.
