Date: Wednesday, 16 November 2022 Time: 3.30 pm Venue: Seminar Hall Carpentry, geometry, and category theory Anand Deopurkar Australian National University, Canberra. 16-11-22 Abstract Around the year 2000, multiple groups of mathematicians settled a long-standing open question. They proved that a carpenter's rule placed in the plane in any configuration can be straightened without bending or overlapping. The ideas in the proof have unexpected application to a problem in categorical representation theory (work in progress with Asilata Bapat and Anthony Licata). I will explain these ideas and the application.
