Abstract

Most homogeneous polynomials define smooth hypersurfaces in projective space. Generalizing results of Tommasi and others, we establish homological stability for the space of smooth polynomials, with or without marked points on the hypersurface (as a codimension 1 analogue of M_{g, n}). On the way we develop a "fancy" version of the principle of inclusion-exclusion, building on work of Vassiliev. This talk will be based on joint work with Sean Howe and with Alexis Aumonier
