Abstract

This talk aims to describe the Picard group of two contrasting classes of compact complex manifolds, namely quotients of complex semisimple Lie groups by uniform lattices and the other being compact, locally Hermitian symmetric spaces of non compact type. I will also describe the Picard group of total spaces of certain naturally occurring holomorphic fibre bundles over these spaces as mentioned above, and also touch upon some of their other interesting properties.

In the course of the talk, preliminaries and background will be developed before stating the main results whereas proofs will be refrained from being presented. Rather, if time permits, I will survey some new results about vanishing of Hodge numbers of type (1,p) and (0, p) for irreducible locally Hermitian symmetric spaces which extends the previously known results for (0, p) Hodge numbers due to R. Parthasarathy.
