Development of moduli of principal bundles and representation theory

Abstract

I will survey the classical work of A. Ramanathan on the moduli of principal bundles (generalizing the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and Seshadri's moduli constructions), its relationship with representation theory of Fuchsian groups and the later developments on parabolic and parahoric bundles. I will talk a bit about the new surprising developments on the side of Bruhat-Tits theory which have arisen from the "bundle theoretic" developments.
