Abstract

A natural question to ask, given a number field, is how many extensions it has of some prescribed quality, such as a prescribed Galois group. I will start with some general results and then move on to talking about counting quartic D_4 extensions of Q, based on Cohen, Diaz y Diaz and Olivier's paper.
