CMI PhD Research Seminar Date: Tuesday, 22 October 2024 Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Venue: Seminar Hall Fundamental Group of the Hawaiian Earring Khushbu Gulati Chennai Mathematical Institute. 22-10-24 Abstract The Hawaiian earring is a classical example of a one dimensional topological space. Its fundamental group is 'very large', although it is not free. It has been extensively studied by many mathematicians. In this talk, we will see that the fundamental group of the Hawaiian Earring is the 'free-$\sigma$ product' of copies of $\mathbb{Z}$. We shall also see an explicit description for the first singular homology group of the Hawaiian Earring, as given by Katsuya Eda and K. Kawamura.
