Abstract

Abstract: To every finite group is associated a table called its character table. The Monster group has

808017424794512875886459904961710757005754368000000000

elements, but its character table is a mere 194 x 194 array. The ATLAS of Finite Groups contains the character tables of many interesting finite groups (including the Monster). An ATLAS table contains other supplementary information such as centralizer sizes and power maps. In this talk, I will show you some things that you can count in the group using such a table. Most are well-known, and one or two, perhaps, are new.
