The classification of smooth complex algebraic varieties of this type is a natural but difficult problem. Jointly with R. V. Gurjar and S. R. Gurjar, we classified smooth non-contractible complex affine Eilenberg-MacLane surfaces of (log) non-general type, and obtained an interesting result on the universal cover of smooth complex projective Eilenberg-MacLane surfaces, modulo an old conjecture of Igor R. Shafarevich. Finally, I will present my recent joint works with Indranil Biswas on the classification of smooth complex algebraic surfaces, affine and projective, with respect to another rational homotopy-theoretic property.
