Abstract

Symmetries, both spacetime and gauge, serve as powerful tools in formulating consistent physical theories. After a brief overview of the role of asymptotic symmetries in gravity and gauge theories, I will discuss how these symmetries can be canonically described within the light-cone formalism, arising from residual gauge invariance. I will address several subtleties that arise when setting up the canonical formulation on a single or on two intersecting null surfaces. Finally, I will comment on interesting links between the light-cone approach and ultra-relativistic or Carrollian physics, which are relevant for asymptotic symmetries in gravity and flat space holography.
