Abstract

Min-max methods are frequently used in calculus of variations to find critical points of a functional. Minimal hypersurfaces are the critical points of the area functional. The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear elliptic PDE which has deep connections with the theory of minimal hypersurfaces. The solutions to this equation are the critical points of an energy functional. In my talk, I will discuss the relationship between the area functional and the Allen-Cahn energy functional, especially the min-max theories of these two functionals.
