    A New Loomis-Whitney-Type Projection Inequality
    Gowtham R. Kurri
    IIIT Hyderabad.
    Abstract
The Loomis-Whitney inequality (1949) is a classical result in geometry and combinatorics that, in its simplest form, bounds the size of a finite subset of $\mathbb{R}^3$ in terms of the cardinalities of its projections onto the $xy$-, $yz$-, and $zx$-planes. Radhakrishnan (2003) gave an elegant entropy-based proof using a version of Shearer's lemma, which relates the entropy of a collection of random variables to the sum of entropies of their subsets. Building on a stronger formulation of Shearer's lemma due to Kahn (2001) and Madiman and Tetali (2010), we establish a new Loomis-Whitney-type inequality that strengthens the classical bound by incorporating additional slice-level structural information beyond coordinate projections. This talk is based on joint work with Gunank Jakhar, Suryajith Chillara, and Vinod M. Prabhakaran.

No prior background in entropy or information theory is assumed. The talk begins with a brief introduction to entropy and its properties used in the talk. This will be a board talk.

About the speaker: Dr. Gowtham R. Kurri is an Assistant Professor with the Signal Processing and Communications Research Centre at IIIT Hyderabad. His research focuses on information theory and its applications to computer science and machine learning. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai in 2020. He was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University from 2020-2023. He is a recipient of the ANRF Prime Minister's Early Career Research Grant (2025). Earlier, he worked as an Associate Engineer at Qualcomm India Private Limited, Hyderabad (2011-2012) and as a Research Intern in the Blockchain Technology Group at IBM Research, Bangalore (2019).
