Alumni meet, 1 February, 2014

A one-day alumni event was organized at CMI on Saturday, 1 February, 2014. On this occasion, there was also a formal General Body Meeting of the Alumni Association. The meeting took place in the NKN classroom on the second floor of the new building.

22 members of the alumni association participated in person and three members participated via video conferencing.

The General Body Meeting began at 10:30 am and lasted for an hour. After the meeting Professor R Sridharan gave a lecture on Reflections on some mathematicians in British India.

The following items were discussed at the General Body Meeting:

  1. There was a discussion on how to utilize the alumni association funds. On a related note many alumni expressed a wish to fund current student activities. It was decided that a wish list should be prepared in consultation with current students and this can be shared with alumni.

  2. Regarding job opportunities for CMI graduates, it was agreed that there should be a mailing list to which interested current students can subscribe. Potential employers, alumni can use this mailing list to contact current students directly.

  3. A CMI Alumni Association Newsletter will be published periodically and work on the first edition will start right away. It was suggested that these newsletters should include articles by alumni/faculty, CMI news, information about students etc.

  4. A mailing list of all the members of the alumni association should be created for better communication within the association. In addition the current students of CMI could get in touch with the alumni association using this mailing list.

  5. There was discussion about ways to increase awareness about CMI. One proposal was for CMI faculty and alumni to visit various places and give presentations about life in CMI, prospects after CMI and other related matters.

  6. With regard to some of the above points it was suggested that CMI website be redesigned to have a more "contemporary" look.


Alumni meet, 12 January, 2013

A one-day alumni event was organized at CMI on Saturday, 12 January, 2013. On this occasion, there was also a formal General Body Meeting of the Alumni Association. The meeting took place in the NKN classroom on the second floor of the new building. Approximately 25 visiting alumni participated, along with 10–15 faculty and students.

The meeting began with welcoming remarks by Prof Rajeeva Karandikar, Director, and Prof Madhavan Mukund, Dean of Studies. This was followed by a lecture on Option Pricing by Prof Karandikar.

The General Body Meeting took place after the tea break. The following items were discussed.

  1. The two proposed changes to the constitution were ratified.

    • The first modification was to limit membership categories to Life Membership alone. The fee for Life Membership was fixed at Rs 2000.

    • The second modification was to introduce more flexibility in nominating authorized persons to operate the Association's bank account.

  2. Life Members will receive T-shirts and mugs with the CMI logo. The Institute will also make arrangements to provide other benefits to Alumni Association members, such as the use of the guest rooms and other facilities on campus.

  3. There was a discussion on the utilization of funds raised through Life Memberships and other donations. In the initial phases, it was felt that these funds should primarily be used for student activities and hostel infrastructure. A list of required equipment/goodies for the current students will be drawn up and donations will be welcomed to buy these.

  4. A new set of office bearers were elected for a period of two years, 2013–2015. The new office bearers are.

  5. The need to register the alumni association was stressed. The new office bearers will pursue this in conjunction with the Institute authorities.

  6. An annual meeting of the Alumni Association will be held every January (first or second weekend). In addition, a smaller gathering will be held in August during the convocation. During these meetings sessions will organized for the current students. The possibility of broadcasting the meeting to those not present should be explored.
