Abstract: These lectures will highlight the triangular interaction between astronomy, physics and mathematics which has helped all of these three subjects. There will be historical examples given to illustrate this fact, including (i) Kepler's laws, (ii) Gravitational field of a spherical mass distribution, (iii) Halley's comet, (iv) The discovery of Neptune, (v) The secret of solar energy, (vi) The gravitational bending of light and (vii) Gravitational lensing. In each case astronomical studies led to deeper understanding of physical laws and inspired excellent applications of mathematics. Public Lecture Professor Narlikar will deliver a public lecture at 5:30 pm on February 10, 2010 at Ramanujan Auditorium, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, C.I.T Campus, Tharamani, Chennai on Searches for Micro-life in the Earth's Atmosphere as part of the CMI-TCS Distinguished Lecture Series. |
