TRANSLATING THROUGH LITERATURE This Friday's (April 11, 2 p.m. Seminar Hall, CMI) Seminar will deal with many aspects of Translation. Translating the writer's world for the benefit of his/ her reader, as well as the conventional translating between languages. How do you convey your unique ethnic sensibilities to an alien reader? How do you deal with something that is unique to your culture? We have two veterans to tell us of their experiences. Ashokamitran is a living legend of Tamil literature. He is an interesting speaker with a delightful sense of humour. Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan is a respected translator of Malayalam literature, having translated some of the greatest writers in that language into English. Besides them, we are also fortunate to have Chennai's well-known playwright and film-maker Chetan Shah to interact with us during the open discussion afterwards. Please come, and bring your friends. |
