Abstract

Galois Theory marks a transition between ``high-school algebra'', the classical approach to solving polynomial equations, and ``college algebra'', the axiomatic study of abstract structures like groups, fields and rings. In this talk we shall discuss a few aspects of the development of Field and Galois Theory and the evolution of Abstract Algebra. The talk will be accessible to students.
