Abstract

Almost all applications involving optimization of any significance involve situations where the degrees of freedom (variables) are far fewer than the number of parameters that have to be controlled to within certain values. The speaker has been involved with the finding of the global minimum for the merit functions that result from this approach since 1950.

Examples including applications like gigabit chip design, optimal bomb, laser design and propagation, disposal of high level radioactive waste etc. Various areas of practical interest will be discussed. These will mostly describe the research work of the author and others at NASA, Los Alamos National Laboratory etc.
