ntroduction to Loop quantum gravity

In this talk we will introduce the basic motivations and ideas underlying Loop quantum gravity (LQG). LQG is a canonical quantization of Einstein's theory of gravity which tries to keep all the gauge symmetries of the theory intact even at the quantum level. We will summarise the main results that have been obtained in this field and outline some of the long-standing problems. Finally we will argue how certain two-dimensional generally covariant field theories are perfect toy models, in that they shed light on many of the open issues in LQG.
