Abstract

After our high accuracy numerical simulations showed that upto R-3 (R is the inter-quark separation) the static potential in three and four-dimensional QCD is the same as in bosonic string theory(Nambu-Goto theory), we have made considerable progress in the analytical understanding of the quantum mechanics of string-like objects.

Based on the Polchinski-Strominger effective string formalism, we have proved the above result analytically. We have made progress understanding the classical vs quantum equivalence of effective string theories. We have most recently developed a covariant calculus or a systematic construction of effective string theories to arbitrary orders.

In this talk I shall be presenting the technical details of these developments.
