Professor David Mumford of Brown University will be in residence at the Chennai Mathematical Institute from the 7th of January to the 24th of February, 2008. He will deliver a course of lectures on the "Theory of Shape". The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. The first lecture is on the 8th of January. Course description: Methods of representing shape, the geometry of the space of shapes, warping and matching of shapes, and some applications to problems in computer vision and medical imaging. Prerequisites: Good knowledge of variational calculus, Hilbert space, L2(Rn). Background which will be rapidly introduced/reviewed as these topics are needed: function spaces including Sobolev spaces, basic differential geometry - covariant derivatives, geodesics, curvature, Lie groups/algebras, conformal and complex analytic maps and their expansions.
