Lecture Series

Professor David Mumford of Brown University will be in residence at the
Chennai Mathematical Institute from the 7th of January to the 24th of
February, 2008.

He will deliver a course of lectures on the "Theory of Shape".

The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m.

The first lecture is on the 8th of January.

Course description: Methods of representing shape, the geometry of the
space of shapes, warping and matching of shapes, and some applications to
problems in computer vision and medical imaging.

Prerequisites: Good knowledge of variational calculus, Hilbert space,
L2(Rn). Background which will be rapidly introduced/reviewed as these
topics are needed: function spaces including Sobolev spaces, basic
differential geometry - covariant derivatives, geodesics, curvature, Lie
groups/algebras, conformal and complex analytic maps and their expansions.
