Quantum Mechanics - I
Instructor: Dr. K. Narayan
Text books followed were:
- Perspectives of Modern Physics by A.Beiser( we did the basics like Photoelectric Effect and Bohr Model)
- Modern Quantum Mechanics by J. Sakurai (we did the basic mathematical framework. Mainly this book was followed)
- Quantum Mechanics by Cohen-Tanoudji (In the later stage, the harmonic oscillator and polynimial method for solving the Scrodinger's Eqn. was done from this book)
- Quantum Mechanics (Course of Theoretical Physics, Vol.3) by Landau & Lifschitz (Potential Wells were discussed)
- Quantum Mechanics by Schiff
Two other classic books which can be read as leisure time reading are:
1)Dirac's monograph (here he introduced his famous Dirac notation which we follow in modern Quantum Mechanics)
2)Feynmann Lectures (Vol. 3)
Course outline: Aspects of modern physics -- blackbody radiation, photoelectric effect, de Broglie waves, interference experiments, Bohr atomic model. Quantum mechanics -- Stern-Gerlach experiments, double slit experiments, interference of amplitudes, Dirac kets/bras/operators, matrix representations, uncertainty relations, position/momentum operators, time evolution and the Schrodinger equation, Schrodinger/Heisenberg pictures, harmonic oscillator (creation-annihilation operators etc), position space representations and Schrodinger's equation, potential wells (reflection/transmission, tunnelling), the harmonic oscillator and Hermite polynomials, angular momentum.
The course was graded as follows:
a) Mid-sem ---- 35%
b) Quiz ---- 15%
c) End-sem ---- 50%
