Text and reference books: J. Sakurai, Modern Quantum Mechanics; C. Cohen-Tannoudji, Quantum Mechanics (2 vols); Landau and Lifshitz, Quantum Mechanics (Course of Theoretical Physics, Vol.3); Schiff; and so on. Two classics are Dirac's monograph and the Feynman lectures (vol.3).

Course outline (broadly): The quantum central force problem and angular momentum, hydrogen atom.

Perturbation theory (time-independent non-degenerate and degenerate), Stark, Zeeman effects, fine structure etc in the Hydrogen atom, variational methods and the Helium atom, quasi-classical (WKB) approximations, time-dependent potentials and perturbation theory, scattering.

Regular assignments, 30%,

Midsem exam, 35%,

Endsem exam, 35%.
