Combinatorial and Computational Algebra and Geometry 2026

There will be a workshop on combinatorial and computational algebra and geometry at CMI during 5th — 9th October 2026. Principal speaker is Prof Sara Faridi (Dalhousie University, Canada). Manoj Kummini will give some lectures on computational aspects of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

Combinatorial free resolutions

Abstract: The purpose of this course is to highlight the use of combinatorial topology in the study of free resolutions of monomial ideals. The main tool we will be using is discrete Morse Theory, used to systematically remove redundant parts of a free resolution. Topics: cellular/multigraded resolutions; extremal ideals and resolutions; primary decompositions of powers using extremal ideals; symbolic powers and integral closures.

Computational techniques

Abstract: This lectures will focus on computations in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry in Macaulay2. Topics: overview of Grobner bases, basics of programming in Macaulay2, Hilbert functions and free resolutions, examples of various computations. Familiarity with Grobner bases at the level of Chapters 1 and 2 in Ideals, Varieties and algorithms by Cox, Little and O'Shea is expected.

Applying

The target audience for this workshop is advanced PhD students and postdocs in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. We will be able to support a few non-local participants with accommodation and meals.

Pre-requisites. Introductory commutative algebra; Hilbert functions; free resolutions; basic homological algebra; Tor, Ext.
