Reflections on GS bring to mind someone with a contagious zest for life who appreciated and enjoyed its arts.

He is still the 'most brilliant man' among my acquaintances, made rarer, in combination with his 'humane' personality.

The norm is for students to know their teachers and perhaps hope that they in turn may be aware of their existence in name at least. Here again I was surprised by GS at how intimately he knew every-one of the students in the department even if he had never taught them.

Last, yet not the least of the leaves of his book for me is his humility.
