Carving out Ph.D's
Motivating Research

To many of us at Tambaram, research and teaching is a way of life and we have involved our students and members of staff of other departments in our research. As a matter of fact, many of us started research for its own sake and not necessarily for a research degree. This is amply illustrated by the kind of investigations we have carried on at the department of Statistics and by the kind of departmental publications ranging from kolam on the computer to the Gospel of St. Mark in the language of the gypsies.

Dr. George Abraham was chiefly responsible for starting the B.Sc course in statistics in the academic year 1961-62. The M.Sc course in Statistics was started in the academic year 1969-70 and a new department of Statistics was formed in 1970, with Dr. Gift Siromoney as its head. Now (1976), the department is recognized as a postgraduate research center for guiding candidates for the M.Phil and Ph.D degrees of the University of Madras.
