Abstract

Quantum phase transitions or zero temperature phase transitions are phase transitions which are driven by quantum fluctuations rather than thermal fluctuations in the conventional phase transitions. After introducing the basics of zero temperature quantum phase transitions, I shall present the Kibble-Zurek idea of defect generation in finite temperature phase transitions which shall be extended to quantum phase transitions, the main topic of the talk. The dependence of these density of defects on various factors shall be discussed and some interesting results on this topic shall be presented.
