Workshop details

Notions like ergodicity, mixing, equidistribution and their connections to central and extremal limit theorems have been studied by number theorists, ergodic theorists and probabilists. They have often looked at similar questions from different angles using different tools, but there has been very little dialogue between them. This workshop aims to do just that, to initiate interaction between these groups.

The equidistribution of sequences modulo one is intimately linked to Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics, an evolving field of research enriched by significant contributions from ergodic theory. Concurrently, the finer statistics of gap distributions represent another active domain of inquiry at the intersection of ergodic theory and number theory. The underlying methods frequently rely on probabilistic frameworks — such as the method of moments and cumulants, Stein's method etc. By leveraging these techniques, researchers have successfully established a broad range of limit theorems.

We plan to have a few pedagogical lectures in the first two days followed by research talks in the following areas:

  • Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics.
  • Equidistribution and correlation statistics for arithmetic sequences.
  • Probabilistic aspects of number theory — central and extremal limit theorems, methods of moments and cumulants, Stein's method.
