Instructor: Dr. K. Narayan
Text books followed were:
- Modern Quantum Mechanics by J.Sakurai
- Quantum Mechanics (2 vols.) by Claude-Cohen Tannoudji
- Quantum Mechanics (Non-relativistic theory) by Landau & Lifschitz (Course of Theoretical Physics Vol. 3)
- We also referred to books by Schiff, Liboff and Merxbacher from time to time
- Feynmann Lectures and Dirac's monographs are two more classics
Course outline: The quantum central force problem and angular momentum, hydrogen atom, addition of angular momenta, Clebsch-Gordan co-efficient, perturbation theory (time-independent non-degenerate and degenerate), Stark,Zeeman effects, fine structure etc in the Hydrogen atom, variational methods and the Helium atom, quasi-classical (WKB) approximations, time-dependent potentials and perturbation theory, scattering, Born approximation.
