A former student in the Department of Mathematics

I was privileged to come in contact with Professor Gift Siromoney when I was a student in Madras Christian College. Prof.Gift Siromoney was my most beloved teacher. He taught me probability, statistics and astronomy. His approach to these subjects was very practical. This enabled his students to understand and appreciate these otherwise difficult subjects. Madras Christian College was one of the few colleges in Tamil Nadu in those days which was equipped with scientific instruments for astronomical observations. Prof. Gift Siromoney took pains to take his students periodically to the college terrace or Marina beach to teach them to observe the planets and stellar constellations. Prof.Gift Siromoney was very discerning. He could spot talent unerringly and encouraged his students to excel. When I wrote my first mathematical article as a student, I was very thrilled. Prof.Gift Siromoney felt that my euphoria would do no good in the long run. He took great pains to introduce me to original articles in International Mathematical journals. He made me understand that real mathematics lay far beyond the realm of college mathematics. I owe him a lot for encouraging me to look beyond my narrow confines in mathematics.

Prof.Gift Siromoney displayed infinite patience in understanding the difficulties of his students. Very genial in disposition, always ready to help whenever and wherever required, Prof.Gift Siromoney had carved out a separate place for himself in the hearts of his admiring students. Even as students we could discern the vast reach of his interests in mathematics and its applications. He made a difference in the lives and outlook of his students through his life and example. I fondly remember Prof.Gift Siromoney on this day, for all that he stood for me. May his soul live in everlasting peace!
