Arshia Sattar

02-11-11

Abstract

There have always been many ways to read the ramayana -- the tradition has been diverse and pluralistic in literature and the arts over the centuries. this talk will think about some of the ways in which we can make the ramayana meaningful to us as men and women in the 21st century. how do we deal with the idea of rama as god? how do women come to terms with his treatment of sita? what consequences have exclusionary readings of the ramayana had for the text itself? why has ak ramanujan's essay on '300 ramayanas' created such a stir?
