Abstract

What are the qualitatively different types of elements in a finite abelian group? This question may be rephrased as: what are the orbits in a finite abelian group under the action of its group of automorphisms?

An enumeration of orbits has been known for more than a hundred years. However, by introducing the notion of degeneration, this question becomes amenable to combinatorial techniques, and the answer is expressed in an intuitive visual form.

The talk will be elementary. It is based on joint work with Kunal Dutta.
