All residents in the hostel are expected to follow the rules
and regulations of the hostel, as described in this document.
Hostel matters are decided and enforced by a group of faculty
members in the form of a "Hostel Committee". This committee will
collectively function as the warden. They will be assisted by the
Estate Manager who has an office in the hostel premises.
1. Behaviour and Discipline
-
Hostel is the place where residents live and work. This
requires an overall good maintenance of hostel atmosphere and the
facilities. Inmates are responsible for healthy and pleasant
living conditions in the hostel. Due consideration must be
accorded to other inmates at all times. Disturbing other inmates
and the general peace is a serious offence. Noise level should be
kept low to allow others the opportunity to study or sleep in
comfort.
-
Ragging is a criminal offence as per the direction of
the Supreme Court in SLP no. 24295 of 2006. CMI strictly adheres
to the directives of the Supreme Court and the UGC notification
in this regard. Any instance of ragging will result in punishment
ranging from suspension of academic privileges, expulsion from
the institute to the filing of a criminal case with the local
police.
-
Smoking is prohibited in all locations of the campus.
-
Storing or consumption of alcoholic beverages or
prohibited drugs is strictly forbidden everywhere in the
campus.
-
Vandalism is a serious offence. Hostel inmates are
expected to take good care of the furniture, equipment etc that
belong to CMI. Tampering with or destroying any CMI property will
result in fines and other corrective action. When specific
offenders can not be identified, an act of vandalism will be
treated as a collective offence.
-
All rooms in the hostel come equipped with a standard set
of items. When inmates are assigned rooms they are required to
check that all the items are in good condition. If not, they
should immediately bring this to the attention of the Estate
Manager. When inmates leave they must ensure that they return the
room in the condition they received it. Writing or painting is
not allowed on any walls in the hostel complex.
-
Inmates are responsible for cleanliness of their
rooms. Inmates are expected to maintain a certain amount of
hygiene in their rooms. Cleaning staff of the hostel may be
employed by the inmates to clean their rooms for a nominal
charge, to be fixed periodically by the Hostel Committee.
Inmates must stay in the rooms allocated to them.
-
Any hostel inmate not staying in the hostel for a night
must inform the Estate Manager. Any inmate who finds his/her
room-mate missing for more than 24 hours, must report this to the
security and the Estate Manager immediately. This is to enable
the hostel authorities to take immediate action if any untoward
incident has taken place.
-
Any unacceptable behaviour by a room-mate may be reported
by the other room-mate to the Estate Manager.
-
All guests to the hostel must leave the hostel by
9 p.m. If they are staying beyond that time, the Estate
Manager and the security must be informed beforehand. All
overnight guests are bound by the visitor policy.
-
Inmates are responsible for the safety and well-being of
their personal items. They have to purchase locks and ensure that
the rooms are properly locked when they are away. It is advisable
to keep valuables and cash under lock and key. Some rooms in the
hostel are equipped with locks and residents are given a
key. Residents in these rooms are required to turn in their keys
to the security when leaving for more than a day.
-
Inmates are not allowed to keep pets in the hostel complex.
2. Visitors
-
Any overnight stay in the hostel will be treated as
visiting the hostel and is bound by this policy.
-
Inmates hosting visitors must inform the Estate Manager
and the security prior to the arrival of the guests.
-
A Ph.D student staying in a single room may host a
visitor free of charge. But if a guest stays for more than 3
nights in succession permission should be taken from the
warden.
-
If two inmates sharing a room want to host a visitor,
both of them must confirm this in writing. A visitor is not
allowed to stay in a room if a person in that room does not give
his or her consent. If both inmates are in agreement then a
visitor may stay in the room for a maximum of three nights in
succession, free of charge.
-
Guest rooms, when available, may be used to host
visitors. A charge of Rs 250 per night will be levied for one
person. An extra person will be charged Rs 150 per night. At most
two guests may stay in a room.
-
Guest rooms can only be reserved through the Estate
Manager.
-
In case a visitor causes any damage to CMI property or
causes disturbance in the campus the host will be
responsible.
-
The hostel committee reserves the right to fine the host
and/or removing the host's privilege to entertain visitors in
future.
3. Emergency
-
In case of an emergency the warden and the manager should
be informed as soon as possible.
-
First Aid Box is available with the security guards at
main gate and at the hostel complex.
-
Fire extinguishers are placed in every corridor.
-
A vehicle is parked at CMI campus from 5 p.m. to
6 a.m. everyday which can be used for emergency needs. The
security guards at the main gate will also have emergency contact
information.
4. Rights of the Hostel Committee
-
Any breach of these rules will invite an enquiry that
will be conducted by the Hostel Committee. If the inmate is found
guilty, then the Hostel Committee will take disciplinary action
that it deems fit, amounting to even expulsion at short notice
from the hostel. Ignorance of rules will not be accepted as an
excuse.
-
The Hostel Committee is responsible for updating and
revising the rules and regulations from time to time and will
keep the residents informed of any changes.
